Holding up my hand to shield my eyes from the sun, I stepped closer to the water. Sand clung to the skin on my feet while the scent of salt engulfed my senses.

There really was no place like the beach.

After a full morning of building sandcastles and swimming, Roane and Cash were now attempting to ride a few waves directly onto the shore. With the glare from the sun, it was hard to see, but that wasn’t about to stop me from snapping pictures like a mad woman. As much as it pained me to say, I was so bad at remembering to capture these kinds of moments. I’ve seen the snide comments some of the other mothers from Roane’s school make on Facebook. I know I shouldn’t let them get to me, but there seems to be this unwritten expectation that you should chronicle your child’s life and memorialize it through long-winded posts and videos. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to have those memories to look back on one day, but the truth is that some of us were too preoccupied with making sure our bills were paid each month to take pictures for each minor holiday people gushed about online.

“Roane! Look over here, baby,” I shouted.

He grinned at me, the gap where his now-missing tooth had been on full display. “Mummy! Did you see?”

“I did! You did such a good job.”

“Now get Cash!”

“Cash!”

He glanced in my direction and waved. It shouldn’t be legal for a man to look that good. And I wasn’t the only one who noticed either. More than a few women were admiring him from afar. A couple had even stopped to ask for an autograph. Cash had obliged them, but one would think that kind of constant attention had to be exhausting after a while.

Cash wasn’t fazed by it though.

“What is it?”

“Smile!” I yelled back. “I’m taking pictures.”

“Do I have to?” The level of whininess in his voice could have put Roane to shame. He adopted that exact same tone any time I asked him to make his bed. Beads of water dripped from the ends of Cash’s hair and down his chest. I might as well add myself to his lengthy list of admirers, because whether I wanted to admit it or not, there was a copy of Rolling Stone magazine with him gracing the front cover stashed underneath my bed. To top it off, the icing on that glorious cake was the fact the centerfold spread was a picture of him in nothing more than a pair of boxers.

I had spent the better part of a week staring at that picture every minute I could spare, and it had been time well spent. But being here, on this beach, was a hundred times better.

“Yes, you have to!”

“Fine.”

Tossing a boogie board aside, Cash rushed forward. His feet sprinted through the water with ease. By the time I realized his intended destination was where I stood, it was too late.

Rough hands fastened around my waist.
