Chapter Twenty

My jaw drops. “Mob? As in ‘A friend should always underestimate your virtues and an enemy overestimate your faults.’ type of mobsters?”

I can’t sit still any longer and slide off my stool to pace in front of the breakfast bar. Visions of a bloody horse’s head in my bed send a shiver down my spine. And then I think of Savage, fear slithering through my veins at the thought of the unlimited power he has if he’s part of the mob. His unexplained psychosis, a whole other matter.

Then there’s the part of his madness that turns me on, and I can almost feel his lips on mine again. The way he took control of my mouth and delivered that mind-blowing kiss.

My thoughts drift to Quinn watching us, and as much as he would deny it, I saw the hunger in his eyes. Along with anger, but that was probably at himself for being turned on watching someone else kiss me. I mean, we all have our kinks, right? Which leads me to a vision of Savage and Gage devouring me while Quinn watches; a large hand wrapped around a thick shaft, stroking himself.

Gah! What the hell is wrong with me?

Shaking off my thoughts, I try to focus on what Dani is saying. “So, though it’s not supposed to be common knowledge, they’re an old mob family that dates back over a hundred years.”

Huh. “And how do you know all of this, especially if it’s some big secret?”

She shrugs a dainty shoulder while taking a sip of her coffee. “When I first started here, Asmodeus asked me to check his security measures. I didn’t like them and put a new system in place, which led me to vet your,” she huffs out a small laugh, “soulmates.”

My heart swells before I push the feeling away. Stupid soulmates. “Okay, I need a plan.” I continue my pacing. “One for the short term and another for the long term.”

Dani pours yet another cup of coffee, savoring it before grabbing my hand and pulling me back to the stool. “Sit down. You’re making me nervous.” When I settle in, she continues. “Short term is easy. Go grab an overnight bag and stay with me tonight.”

I nod my head. “Perfect, then I can avoid,” I glance over at Dani, “uh, I mean, work on figuring out who put a hit on me.” I squint one eye in thought for a moment. “I already have a firm idea of who it is. Now, I just need to come up with a way to get the hit canceled.”

Dani huffs out a sigh. “Easier said than done. I really think you should talk to your mates. Let them handle this. It’s what they do. Whereas you have no clue about the world you’re stepping into.”

I roll my eyes at her. “I’m not a complete idiot, Dani. I just need a night to let everything soak in, make some decisions, come up with a plan.” I slide off the stool and hug her to help take the sting out of my words.
