Chapter four

Rogue Vampire

With a growl of frustration, I pushed my laptop away from me and leaned back in my office chair. My fault for checking up on my family on social media.

Stacy had warned me not to. Katherine had as well before sending me out to Portland, but homesickness had overcome me.

My mom’s posts had the sort of upbeat cheerfulness I wouldn’t have expected from someone after they’d just lost their son. I read between the lines that she was trying to keep up a cheerful facade for social media. She probably wasn’t doing well.

No posts from my father, but his brother had posted that he had taken my father to the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

Andre’s family didn’t seem to be doing good either. I wished I could have gone to his memorial and funeral.

Frustrated and heartbroken, but not yet ready to date again, I threw myself into my work. I actually really enjoyed the new job of helping supernaturals. Mostly shifters, but sometimes also vampires, fae, mages, or witches that needed the assistance the PCA provided.

The work was almost more like social work. I spent a lot of time with new shifters like me or dealing with problems that supernaturals were having with mundane human agencies. My cop background benefited me more than once. Best of all, I felt like I was making a difference in their lives. I even began making a few friends in the local shifter pack. I was super relieved to find out that the alpha wolf thing from books was a total myth. The pack function more as a social organization, with no one shifter in charge.

I was almost getting into the swing of things after another month when the call came through. An emergency, a vampire on a killing spree out near the mall. I wasn’t sure how I could help, but Stacy specifically requested that I come.

I’d been working with the parents of a new young werewolf. Neither parent was a shifter themselves, either because nothing had activated their first change or because the shifter ability had skipped their generation. The girl was only ten and thought it was funny to be a wolf all the time after dark. The parents were understandably a little at their wits end, having been thrown in as abruptly as I had been. The call had caught me in a session with the family which had just started and I had to leave them in a lurch to respond to Stacy’s call.

I found her parked near the rear of the lot, under a broken light pole.

“How can I help?” I asked Stacy as jogged up to her.

She waited for me, arms crossed, standing near the trunk of her car. “We need your nose to track down the vampire. We’ve lost it, and the mall is a big place.”

“Do you have a picture of the vampire?” I was still unclear why she’d specifically asked for me.

“No, but we have something better.” Stacy pulled a key fob out of her pocket and hit a button.
