CHAPTER 11

Grant heard Ivy’s bedroom door slam. He was walking down the hall toward his own room when he heard the faint click of the lock.

He felt like an asshole, hell he was an asshole, but dammit, Ivy deserved a little payback. She’d lied to him. They hadn’t been little lies, either. Not telling him that they were married, or had been, was a damn big omission.

Grant walked to the end of the hall, stood by her door for a few minutes trying to decide if he should knock or not. All the while he listened, wondering if he’d hear her crying or cursing. Either was possible, though she didn’t strike him as a crier.

She was—or had been—his wife, so he should know for sure if she was a crier or not. From what little he knew of her, she probably threw and broke things when she was angry. That he could see all too well. The image of her walking down the aisle was vivid; he saw and felt that moment as if it had happened yesterday. The yellow dress pulled all the bits and pieces together. But he still remembered very little else, beyond that moment and snippets from the wedding night. He had no idea how they’d gotten to that church or what had happened since. He knew two things. He’d married Ivy. She’d lied.

It wasn’t too late to call Benedict or Redmon and arrange another place to stay for the night. It wasn’t even too late to get a ride out of town, to leave this all behind once and for all. But he didn’t call anyone. He went to his room and closed the door.

And stared at the yellow dress.

Ivy wasn’t the only one who’d lied. Someone else in this town had to know about the wedding. Some of them had surely been there! Small town weddings were a big deal, weren’t they? Her sister surely knew, which meant Travis Benedict had to know. For the past week, they’d insisted that all they knew about him was his name.

Why would they lie about something like that? What kind of secrets did the residents of this little town keep? More than their share, he suspected.

He had a couple of choices, and the decision was an important one. He could get his ass out of town asap and start the search for his memories elsewhere. A bigger town, a better doctor.

Or he could stay and play the game, and find out what the hell was going on in Mystic Springs.
