Chapter Sixteen

Jo Rodriguez chose PCSO Fiona Murray to go with him to speak to Greg Whittaker. She knew the area well and most of the main people in it. They went in a marked police vehicle, with Fiona driving, because Jo wanted to make it clear to Whittaker from the start that although this was initially a fishing exercise, it was official.

The man had told them to come to his house rather than his business premises, which Jo thought might well have been significant.

Looking at the size of his existing home and mentally trying to put a price tag on it, Jo wondered what sort of a mansion he had planned for the new site, if planning permission was ever granted there. Not to mention why he felt the need to move.

Three shiny, latest model, high-end cars were parked in front of the house on the immaculate gravel driveway. Jo wasn't much of a petrol-head so could only speculate on what they might have cost. His own choice was limited to a functional eight-seater people carrier to accommodate his large family, and he used his service vehicle for work.

The man who appeared as soon as they pulled up was short and stocky, clean shaven, with collar-length curly dark hair. He had on a golfing sweater with a logo which Jo recognised but could never afford even if he'd wanted to. Waves of expensive cologne assailed the nostrils of the two officers as they got out of the car and walked towards Whittaker, who was beaming towards them as if at valued guests.

'DI Rodriguez,' Jo told him. 'We spoke on the phone. And this is PCSO Murray. Thank you for agreeing to see us, Mr Whittaker.'

'Greg, please. Do come into the kitchen and have some coffee. I'll show you the way.'

He led the way into a bright kitchen at the rear of the large property, one whose footprint was not much smaller than the ground floor of Jo's house, even without the enormous conservatory he could see beyond it. Everything looked new, state-of-the-art. Jo wondered whatever was planned for the proposed house which could top this one.

'The wife's out at one of her classes, if you wanted to speak to her for any reason. Now, coffee?'

He was standing in front of a machine which wouldn't have been out of place in a decent restaurant.

'This beast can make almost anything you want, so fire away with the orders.'

'Just an espresso for me, please,' Jo told him as he and PCSO Murray perched on the high bar stools the man indicated.

'Coming right up. And what about you, dear?'

Fiona Murray gave Jo an exaggerated eye roll behind the man's back as he turned to the machine but stayed professional as she said, 'A cappuccino would be very nice, sir, please.'

'Greg, please. You're guests in my house, no need to stand on ceremony.'

He busied himself with setting the machine in motion then sat down opposite them across the marble work surface.

'Now, what can I do for you? You mentioned something about the planning application for the new house.
