Danny and I slid into a booth at the closest restaurant within walking distance to the hospital. It was a casual place with plenty of burger and beer specials, and I ordered for Danny, who said he didn’t have an appetite. Once food was in front of him, I suspected that would change.

While we waited for our meals, we sipped sodas.

“Do you know what happened?” I asked.

He nodded solemnly. “I was with Gus for a bit after Jesse went in for his first surgery. He was there when it all went down but had to go back to the station to write an incident report.” His eyes glazed over as he stared at the table.

“We don’t have to talk about it. We can talk about something else.”

It was like he didn’t even hear me. “They got a domestic dispute call at the end of their shift. They could have let another team take it, but Jesse said they were closer, and he and Gus went to the house. Gus went in first when it became clear that the woman needed immediate help. Her husband had lost his mind and was trying to kill her.” He shook his head, like he couldn’t believe a man could be capable of such a thing. “Gus said it all happened so fast. The guy pulled a gun on him, and before Gus had a chance to react, Jesse got hold of him and threw him to the ground, saving his ass from taking the bullets. My brother took three. Two to the chest, one in the gut. It should have killed him.” He shook his head, eyes still glazed and unseeing. “It should have killed him.”

I reached across the table and grabbed his wrist. “But it didn’t, and in three hours you get to see him with your own eyes. You can see, without any doubt, that he’s going to be okay. And he’s going to be so happy to see you. Danny, look at me.”

He lifted his green eyes, which were not nearly as bright as they normally were.

I forced a smile. “Jesse is okay. Everything is going to be okay. It’s over. Take a breath.”

He swallowed. “Yeah… yeah. It’s over.”
