A Travelling Bookshop
By tacit agreement, Vanda and Giò rushed in silence as far as they could from the house, breathing deeply to purify their lungs. Only when they were close to the main square did they exchange their first comments.
âBack to the drawing board,â grumbled Giò. âNot one single clue as to why that woman came all the way from Switzerland to Trecchina.â
âDo you think she lied to Martine and Gaspard when she said she was going to visit Naples?â
âIâd say so. It would have been different if she had stopped in Naples for a few days, then come here. Also, she booked her agriturismo from Switzerland. No, whatever her reason was, it was a decision she made back home.â
They had stopped just in front of Edoardoâs bookshop, and the man, impeccably dressed in a light blue jacket and navy chinos, a pastel scarf around his neck, came forward to greet them. He was wearing a nice, fresh cologne and his eyes were disarmingly blue, the clear irises outlined in black.
âI hope Iâm not intruding on you charming ladies?â
âOf course not, Edoardo. Giò hasnât been into your bookshop yet, and sheâs definitely a bookworm.â
âPlease come in.â
On this occasion, Giò was particularly grateful that the bookshop wasnât the stuffy kind. It had white walls, and islands in the middle of the room held a collection of globes. On the wall space above the bookshelves, a few display maps showed the names of writers and books from each continent. For a travel enthusiast like Giò, that was the doorway to heaven. She plunged into the travel section that, to her delight, included not only travel guides but prose and poetry from authors from every country, travel memoirs, and cookery and lifestyle books.
When Giò âcame backâ to the real world of Trecchina, she saw Vanda and Edoardo talking earnestly and she recognised the rather concerned expression on his face.
âI donât think you should take this affair so lightly,â Edoardo was saying as Giò joined them, his blue eyes seeming to see straight through the two women. âEither of you. Someone has been killed, and if the murderer is still here, he wonât appreciate you nosing around.â
âHow could he know weâre doing anything of the sort?â The moment anyone told Giò she shouldnât do something, the stronger her determination became to do it all the same, and even something that may have seemed insignificant to her would suddenly take on immense importance.
âVanda found the body, and today the whole village has been bursting with the news that you two took Mr and Mrs Savioz on a murder tour.â
Giò looked guilty. Having lived in London for so many years, she still tended to forget how people in small villages scrutinised you and noticed everything you did. Edoardo was right to be concerned for Vanda; she had already been hit by the murderer once, and she could easily become his next victim if he felt she was going to stir up trouble for him.
How stupid of me not to have given my friendâs safety a single thought.
