Granny had spent the last 30 minutes peering out of her open window. The time was about right. She was sitting on a chair reading, feigning absorption in her book, but she was alert, waiting for someone to walk by like a spider waiting for prey to fall into her net. It wasnât long before she heard what she was listening out for: high heels tapping against the pavement. She glanced out of the window, as if casually.
âGood morning, Rosa.â
âOh, good morning, Paloma. How are you?â
Granny did her best to look surprised to see Mrs Parasole, a tall woman with a delicate, fair complexion. There was something aristocratic about her features, but when she spoke to Granny, two huge rabbit teeth rather spoiled the effect.
âIâm doing fine, and how are you? I heard your granddaughter is back.â
âShe is. Oh, but hers is such an awful story. It was a real tragedy the way that man treated herâ¦â
Mrs Parasoleâs eyes lit up. Granny knew her weaknesses and kept spinning her web. The other woman loved gossiping as much as she loved interfering in peopleâs lives.
âThere arenât many people I can trust, but I need to talk before I go insane.â
âI absolutely understand. That man has to be the worst kind of scoundrel to hurt a sweetheart like Giò.â
âI knew youâd understandâ¦â
Mrs Parasole looked at her, full of expectation.
âIâd love to invite you in for a cup of coffee, but I believe this is your afternoon at the Pink Slippers Society in the library.â
âBut Iâm ahead of time, and they will not mind if I arrive a bit late. Itâs for a good cause, to support a friend in need.â
âOh, that would be so very kind of you,â Granny chirped, clasping her hands together. Giò would have seen right through her, but Mrs Parasole stepped blithely into the spiderâs web. âPlease come in and I will prepare coffee.â
Mrs Parasole sat down in one of the two comfortable armchairs Granny was so proud of. They were older than she was, but upright enough for her to be able to get up easily without the help of an ugly modern device that would push her up while massaging her until she felt like a piece of jelly. On the little table between them sat the finest porcelain cups Granny owned and a silver dish filled with her renowned vanilla and rosemary biscuits. Mrs Parasole liked them so much, she soon had her mouth too full to speak. And Granny took advantage of that to turn the conversation exactly where she wanted it to go.
âBy the way, have you heard any more about the murder?â
Mrs Parasole swallowed her mouthful of biscuit, washed it down with a sip of her coffee and was finally able to reply.
âOh, I suspected from the start it was not an accident. Mrs Rivello is such a pest. It seems her ambition in life is to drive people insane.â
âAre you referring to the case of Valeria and Agostino?â
âAgostino got what he deserved, though it wouldnât hurt Mrs Rivello to mind her own business every once in a while.
