CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Ouch!”

Vassa hissed and shrank from where Dara was touching up her makeup. Placing a hand on her hip, Dara shook her head.

“Look, you need to keep still.”

“How can I sit still when you’re slapping it on like paint on a wall?”

“I wasn’t the one that got hit in the head with a baseball right before a cocktail party.”

The nasty bruise on her forehead had formed on the right side of her face, starting in her hairline and continuing to her ear. It was nice to have Lazarus groveling after her. It was his turn to take her to the hospital, to make sure she didn’t have a concussion.

“I’m almost done. Just try to keep still.”

“Try to be gentle, Ray Lewis.”

Snorting, Dara continued to cover the bruise with foundation. Eyes closed, Vassa twisted her hands in the sequin material of her dress. Gosh, the heels were already killing her feet and she was sitting. Dara said the kitten heels Vassa wanted to wear were ugly and made her look like an old biddy. At least she could walk in them! Not these five-inch white stilettos she knew were gonna come off in the next hour or so.

She tried to relax but her stomach turned. She bit her lip, pressing a hand to her belly, and Dara scolded her for messing up the bold red lip she had.

“Can you just hold on for one second before you destroy my masterpiece?”

Vassa huffed. She couldn’t help it. She was going to another party. This time for a major company (Vassa had seen their sports bars in the yoga studio before) and she needed to look like she belonged. Which was why she used her credit card to buy the dress, because the sweatpants she had wouldn’t cut it.

When Lazarus asked her to come, she expected something simple. A restaurant or ballroom. Not for it to be at the Presidio Officers’ Club. Only those with lots of money and influence rented that space out for weddings and events. She didn’t want a repeat of what happened with Oscar, but she wasn’t sure how she’d fit in with the rich and bougie.

“All done.”

Opening her eyes, Vassa took the mirror Dara handed her.

“This is amazing, Dara.” She touched her face gingerly.

Dara had pulled her curls into a chignon updo with several strands cascading and framing her face. The bruise still peeked out from under the foundation but it didn’t take away from the simple smokey eye that made her brown eyes pop. Holding out her hands, Dara helped Vassa stand up. She wobbled before clasping Dara’s hands tighter.

“Now, are you going to be able to walk?”

“I hope. If not, I’ll pick a wall and stay there for the night.”

Vassa had chosen a simple black halter neck dress. Dressed in a modest-length skirt with a tasteful slit, she felt like a sexy grown woman rather than a confused twentysomething who liked all-you-can-eat sushi. “I can’t believe you’re doing this.” Her gaze was on Vassa’s outfit and Vassa looked down to see if she had gotten deodorant stains on the dress.
