story’ for the people of Ireland, in which

all were once unified in the veneration

of a pagan pantheon. Of course, this

did not reflect the complexity of

pre-Christian Irish culture, but as an

imaginary ‘lifeworld’, the mythic pagan

past is fertile ground for storytelling. The

first Charlotte McManus story of this

collection looks at the implied change-

over point, where the old gods see

the writing on the wall and graciously

withdraw from the landscape.
