On October 21, the UN Security Council adopted Resolution 338, calling for, among other things, a cease-fire, the posting of UN observers along the cease-fire lines, and the implementation of UN Resolution 242 on the ground. Resolution 242, adopted in 1967 after the Six-Day War, included a request for Israel to withdraw from territories that were gained during the Six-Day War.
Syria would accept Resolution 338 only if Israel withdrew from the land it won during the Six-Day War. At the same time, Egypt and Israel accused each other of cease-fire violations, and heavy fighting resumed on the Suez Canal front. So the war continued. Israeli forces pushed south and cut off the city of Suez and the Egyptian Third Army of 20,000 men. Israel was forced to accept a cease-fire just at the moment when it was capable of destroying the Egyptian army. On November 11, 1973, Israel and Egypt signed a cease-fire accord that was drawn up by Israelâs ally, Kissinger, and Egyptian president Anwar el-Sadat.
Israel was outnumbered and lacking in firepower in three of its most influential wars with its surrounding neighbors. However, in every case, Israel was never outmaneuvered or divided in the fight. Every rank in their military was unified in their resolution to defend their state, and with Godâs help, they defeated their enemies.
In 1973, Golda Meir told then-US senator Joe Biden that Israelâs secret weapon to war was âWe have nowhere else to go.â11 The implications of Meirâs statement are profound. It illuminates the drive and audacity that pushed Israel to fight for survival, knowing they were outnumbered on all sides. Israel was unified as a nation, with both a singular purpose and a fear that motivated the people to fight as oneâit was the terror of a new Holocaust.12 Unlike their brothers and sisters, who had their voices silenced during the Holocaust, Israelâs existence is an affirmation that every Jew can have the sovereign right to defend themselves against their enemies.
There is no doubt God was protecting Israel during these strategic battles early in their history. Like Gideonâs army, they were few, but remember, God promised Abraham and his descendants divine protection: âI will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curseâ (Genesis 12:3).
