Her workday seemed never-ending, with several scheduled operations, plus an emergency stabbing victim, who was brought in just as Gen was preparing to start a gall bladder removal. The severity of the penetrating injuries the young man suffered kept her in the OR until not long before she was scheduled to leave.
When she finally was able to check her phone, there was a message from Zach, asking her to call him when she got the time.
She felt a frisson of apprehension as she remembered the somewhat strained atmosphere the evening before.
Had he decided not to come to the airport with her to pick up her mother? Or even intended to tell her he wanted to back out of her plan?
Thinking those things made her not want to call, but she ducked into an empty room and did anyway.
âHello. Howâs your day going?â
There was no hint of anything untoward in his voice, and her shoulders relaxed as she smiled.
âGood, so far. I just have a few things to tie up here, and then Iâm heading home. How was your day? Did you take your parents to the market, like your dad wanted?â
He groaned. âYeah. He insisted on walking the entire building and bought a whack of stuff we donât need, including veg I have growing in the garden. It was so hot, it tired both of them out, so they came back and napped. But now heâs awake again and in the kitchen. He decided he wants to make curry chicken for dinner.â
Gen laughed. âYour dadâs amazing. I love him.â
Zach snorted. âYou can love him, because you didnât have to trail after him all over Port Michael Market while he stopped to talk to every vendor. And you didnât have to carry loads of produce for him too. I felt like a Sherpa.â
Still giggling at his griping, she asked, âWhat did you do while they napped?â
âPuttered around,â he replied, his voice suddenly deeper, silkier. âThinking about you, wishing you were here, so we could...nap... together.â
Her breath caught, and her heart did a little flip as heat fired out from her core to all points north, south, east and west.
Especially south, as she remembered the thrill of him holding her aloft, the two of them moving together.
She cleared her throat. âI would have liked that too,â she said as demurely as she could while thinking about holding him down and doing all things naughty to him. âAlthough, if I had my way, there wouldnât be much actual napping involved.â
The sound he made had a shiver of longing traveling up her spine and made her already warm face grow hot.
âExactly.â
Oh, how she loved that gravelly growl that invaded his voice when he was turned on.
âItâs a shame,â she said, letting her voice drop almost to a whisper. âSuch a shame that with all our family around, there wonât be much chance for...napping.â
âI think we should try to make time, donât you?â
âYes...â
Gosh, she sounded as needy as she felt.
âWhat time are you leaving there?â
âIn about ten minutes, give or take.
