Chapter 13- Cat in a Cage

Despite the fact that I was exhausted from the trip from Odra, I had too much to do to just sit back and relax, no matter how much I wanted to. So, Rhys and I made our way back through the forest and to Vohra.

The South gate guards stopped us, and I presented my papers while Rhys forked over the vahn needed for a temporary visa and we went inside.

“You know, I can’t really see the appeal of Vohra over Odra. It’s much dirtier and much more chaotic,” Rhys said when we entered.

I shrugged. “In my opinion, cities aren’t supposed to be so neat and proper. They’re naturally chaotic, messy places, and whatever Earl Odra and the priests are doing in that city is unnatural to me.”

“If you say so.” He looked down and grimaced. “But me, I much prefer not stepping in garbage or filth every fifteen feet.”

“You’ll get used to it,” I replied. “Now, let’s get going to the Legal District. We’ve got a lot to do today.”

“Right.”

We wound our way through the streets for half an hour until we reached the north of the city and hugged the large stone wall separating the Market District from the Noble District, which was right next to the Legal District.

Which was really a giant square courtyard with nearly a hundred buildings around the edge. The Precinct House was the largest building, four stories of massive gray stone, like an unyielding monolith towering to the heavens.

“It’s certainly big…and gray,” Rhys said.

“And heavily guarded.”

“Oh, right. Lovely.”

I motioned toward the wooden door. “Let’s go in.”

The two of us entered, and I went to the receptionist counter to my left as soon as I entered. Rose was back at her post, and she smiled and blushed when I approached.

“Ah, Mr. Kinley, a pleasure to see you again.”

“Oh, please. The pleasure is all mine,” I replied, shifting my tone of voice and relaxing my face, giving her a lackadaisical, carefree smile.

“You’re too kind. Here to see the captain?”

“As usual. Can I go up?”

“Of course.” She smiled and peered around me. “But who’s your friend?”

“Oh, him. This is Richard, he’s a good friend to both me and Captain Bernard. He just got in from Weir to see Captain Bernard.

“It’s a surprise. I can’t wait to see the look on Michael’s face when he sees his old friend.”

Rose, Weilin bless her, just went along with everything I said, nodding along like a puppy following a scrap of meat.

“Absolutely. You two go on up.”

I nodded and we made our way around the corner and into the room filled with small desks packed against each other with a number of guards sitting at their desks filling out reports. Once we were out of the room and into the hallway, I took another right and entered the stairwell.

As soon as we were alone, Rhys nudged me.
