13. The Devastation Of A Cupid’s Kiss

“Lead the way to yonder truffle, good sir,” I said to Oberon, as Allegra and Jasper left us behind.

I couldn’t resist teasing him. In his elaborate Victorian attire he looked like a fine gentleman from a bygone era. I felt rather ladylike myself in my tightly corseted gown.

He presented his elbow for me to tuck my hand into. “Only if thou taketh my arm, my lady,” he retorted.

Then grimaced at himself. We both sniggered.

“We should ask Greedy,” I said. “I bet she could teach us an ancient thing or two.”

He shuddered. “Please never ask Greedy to teach me any dreaded ancient thing or two.”

I burst into laughter.

I felt on a strange high, jittery with nerves and eager to get going. Maybe it was the liberal amounts of Perk-Me-Up potion I’d drunk, or maybe it really was going to happen tonight, whatever it was, and I suddenly felt ready for it.

My sire had to be at this party and I was going to hunt him or her down. That awful vampire who had dared to bite me when I had been out for an innocent walk had it coming. The memory of that night used to leave me shaking, but now it filled me with fury. How dared they do that to me?

We entered the blazing light of the ballroom, which was a busy, merry swirl of dancers and dazzling lights and laughter. And hor d’oeuvre trays circling, and music thundering, and champagne glasses chinking.

“This way,” he said, cutting through the crowd to lead me towards one of the side wings of the house.

I could hardly breathe for the crush of people in here, and he held my hand to not lose me behind him.

As I passed, people turned to stare at my hair. A few even reached out to touch it, and I ducked my head away each time.

Too many people in here looked like Humbles. Had Ignatia done that on purpose to give her undead guests plenty of chances for a little fun? I could already see a few people sneaking off to conveniently dim corners and other rooms.

Nobody looked deviously vampirish and up to no good, but how was one to tell?

Ignatia was still holding court outside, choosing who may or may not enter her queendom, but there was a good chance my other potential sires were in here. Rhadovir or Henrick or even Oberon Senior.

I had not mentioned the latter possibility to Oberon Junior because he had enough personal troubles with his dad on his mind.

It could even be that lone vampire Calvin, I realised, who had appeared so seemingly randomly at the café that day.

And yet he had been there the same time as Natasha and Susie, and was part of their circle. Had she wanted to say something to me that day, and had his presence put her off?

He could have been lying about only being turned into a vampire after I’d been bitten to put me off his trail.
