Swanny, I Swanny
Swanny, “to declare,” is a verb playable only in the first-person singular, as in “I swanny!” Widely unknown outside of the American South, “I swanny” can still be heard there in moments of annoyance or dismay as a very mild oath meaning “I swear,” derived from a contraction of “I shall warrant ye.” A further shortened form—perhaps the most graceful expression of agitation I’ve ever heard—is also sometimes heard: “I swan.”
