Chapter Twenty

I was about to return to my office, when Nina touched me on the arm. “I need to speak to you for a moment, Diva,” she said in a serious tone and gestured for me to follow her to her bakery.

With four spirits trailing after me, we walked across the street and stepped into her store. I took a deep breath and savored the smell of fresh cakes and cookies. I’d missed the place during the past week and a half.

“I owe you an apology,” she said, sandy brown bowl cut hair stirring when she ran a hand through it in apparent distress. “I thought you’d murdered Edward, but rumor has it that it was a witch or warlock who was responsible.”

“News travels fast,” Jess murmured as the other three ghosts listened in.

“A lot of people think I killed him,” I said, offering her an olive branch while eyeing the food behind the protective glass.

“How could I ever have thought you could kill a man in cold blood?” she said almost to herself. “I saw you try to kill a spider in your office once. I swear, I’ve never heard anyone scream that loudly, or that high-pitched before.” She chuckled in remembrance of what was obviously a fond memory for her. “The poor thing managed to scurry out intact, but I thought you were going to need Doctor Becket to pay you a visit with some smelling salts.”

My lips pressed into a thin line as the phantoms descended into cackles at my expense. I hadn’t been aware of just how much she could see of my office and spun around to take a look. I’d never really noticed before, but she had a clear view through my window all the way to my desk, just like Haydn’s bookstore and the shoe shop next to him apparently had. “Remind me to buy some blinds,” I mouthed to Jess. Her brow wrinkled in confusion. Lipreading wasn’t one of her skills.

While Nina was talking to me again, now would be the perfect opportunity to grill her. “Did you see or hear anyone else the night Mr. Creighton was killed?” I knew she had, but I wanted to hear it from her.

“Sheriff McTavish already asked me all those questions,” Nina replied. She stepped behind the counter and scooped a few of my favorite goodies into a large paper bag. “I heard you two arguing, then saw you drive off, but then I saw you come back half an hour later on foot and head around to the back alley. You tried to hide, but normals aren’t very good at concealing themselves.” She grinned at me condescendingly.

“I didn’t come back that night,” I told her.

“Didn’t you?” she asked as she handed me the bag. “It looked like you. Or at least it was someone around your size.”

“You didn’t see my face?” Obviously she hadn’t, because it hadn’t been me.

“No. Just someone similar to you sneaking around the back alley.”

“Did you tell Sheriff McTavish this?”

“Of course.
