Kali was standing at the window when Perseus returned a short time later. She faced him, expecting a reprimand for leaving her sickbed, but he handed her a cloth-wrapped bundle instead.

“Good to see that you’re doing better,” he said. “Can you eat while we walk?”

“Of course.” She opened the bundle and glanced inside. There were a pair of thick sausages and a couple of slices of crusty bread. “I assume you’re going to help me eat this.”

“Yes.” He pulled on his coat but didn’t take his pack. He must have rented the room for another night.

“Where are we going?” she asked.

“I want you to show me where this Harold lives.”

“You think he’s still alive?”

“Since we didn’t find his body, I suspect he still serves our target.”

“My father.”

Perseus nodded. “Two eviscerated bodies were found near the docks.”

“You think my father killed them.”

“Yes.” The answer was direct and unapologetic.

“Why would he kill them? He killed those men in the livery stable when he came to my defense. He has no reason to kill anyone else.”

“I understand how all of this must seem to you. How you’ve lost one parent only to find the other, but—”

“You understand?” she demanded. “How could you possibly understand this crazy situation I find myself in? Did you wake up one day to learn that you weren’t human? That your father was some sort of monster, and that his hunter wanted you to join him?”

“I do not have to live something to empathize.” His expression remained unchanged. “I’ve been at this a very long time. You must trust my judgment.”

“I’ll judge for myself, thanks.” Maybe Perseus was right, but she couldn’t let go of that slim hope that her father wasn’t a monster. Until she was certain, she would go along with this. And if her father wasn’t the monster Perseus made him out to be, she would find a way to get him to safety.

Perseus silently watched her, unnerving her with his quiet study. It made her wonder if he could read her mind.

“Shall we go see if Harold is less dead than I assumed him to be?” she asked.

Perseus gestured at the door. “After you.”

She gave him a frown as an uneasy thought crossed her mind. What if Perseus was insane? That would add another layer to this whole mess.

Yes, it would best if she judged things for herself.
