CHAPTER 12
“Where are they?” Viola asked, after we’d been walking in the forest for ten minutes. “We ought to have run into them by now.”
“Guilty conscience, maybe,” I muttered. “I can’t believe Snow White’s evil cousins stole my talisman.”
“Who in the world is Snow White?”
“Human faerie tale. They’re usually tamer than the real thing.”
I was less than convinced leaving the palace was the best idea, though we’d sealed the entire corridor where the entrance to the dungeon was. But this foggy path looked a little too much like the empty awfulness of a realm which seemed to have no magic at all. The Sidhe’s elaborate Courts sat upon a rotting foundation. Might other Families have similar skeletons in their closets? Would I dare to tell Lord Hornbeam, on the off chance that it might help clear my name? We clearly had a common enemy, but if my own mother was linked to them, he might blame me by default no matter what.
“I told you not to come back, mortals.”
A bearded man sprang out of the nearest bush. I just about managed not to jump.
“We’re here to ask a few questions,” I told the Little Person. “Can you tell me where the sword is? The one Viola saw in the house?”
His expression stilled. “The sword.”
“Yes. The one with the lightning bolt on it. It used to belong to my family.”
“No,” he said. “It once belonged to another. I picked it up on the forest path.”
Shit. He was actually admitting he had it? Of course, he couldn’t lie… but there was something downright fishy about how it’d ended up in their hands in the first place.
I sought to find the right words. “Did you happen to see my mother, in any shape or form, when you picked it up? Or anyone else?”
“A dead chimera lay elsewhere in the fog. Nobody else was present.”
So it was in the same place as where she died…
“And where is it now?” asked Viola.
“Gone,” said the Little Person. “Another one of us took it. We share everything. Besides, the sword won’t solve your dilemma.”
No. I bet it won’t. I’d also bet several talismans he knew far more than he let on. Time to spring a surprise on him.
“I have another question,” I said. “Have you ever been to the Grey Vale?”
Silence followed, and I half expected him to pull out a knife. Viola flashed me a warning look.
“You ask dangerous questions,” he said softly.
“And you’re evading. It means yes.”
The Little Person’s expression was grave. “I wouldn’t trouble yourself with things which might get you killed, mortals.”
“All right, then,” I said. “Would you tell me where faeries go when they die?”
His expression didn’t change, but he said, “Their souls are collected and taken into the death realm. It’s not uncommon knowledge.”
“So if I wanted to speak with someone who died…?”
Viola shook her head at me, eyes wide in a signal to be quiet. I shrugged one shoulder. I wanted answers, and I’d get them.
“That would depend upon who,” he said.
