Chapter 4: Santorini

“How was dinner?”

My eyes snapped open to find Yiayia’s face less than half an inch from mine. I squeaked, sitting upright so quickly that we almost smacked heads.

“How was dinner?” Yiayia repeated, seemingly unconcerned that she had just given me a minor heart attack.

I hit the light switch over the nightstand. “It was good.”

“Good? What does this mean? Good?” She put her hands on her hips, narrowing her eyes menacingly.

“It means that I enjoyed it. Had a good time. The food was delicious, and I probably shouldn’t have had so much wine.”

I rubbed my eyes, taking note of the dull throb above my eye. The slight headache could have been the result of booze or from being woken up via interrogation by Yiayia. Who knew?

She harrumphed. “I will go with you today. But I have to be back on the ship by three.”

“What?” I asked, my head feeling like a spinning top. “Why do you need to be back at the ship by three?”

“I am in a tournament with Blanche,” she explained, omitting all the necessary details.

“What kind of tournament, and who is Blanche?”

“My friend that I met at lunch. We play cards with the other ladies. The ship staff are putting on a tournament for us this afternoon.”

Part of me wanted further clarification on this tournament, but the other, more selfish part of me was thrilled by the idea of being able to spend the evening alone with Apollo.

“Yes, I am ready for the day.” Yiayia sat on the small couch at the end of my bed and flicked on the TV. One of the few channels offered on the cruise played old sitcoms, and Yiayia was really enjoying watching some of her favorite old shows.

Memories from last night replayed in my mind while I got ready, making me feel light-headed and giddy. I couldn’t keep the smile off my face, and Yiayia kept sending me suspicious glances. She knew I was not a morning person at all, so morning smiles were rare for me. Thankfully, she didn’t seem interested enough to start asking questions, and we made it out of the room without her asking me anything other than whether I’d remembered my hat.

Apollo was waiting for us in the hallway, and I felt my smile widen when his eyes met mine. He smiled back, eyes sweeping over my face, before turning to Yiayia. He offered her his arm. “Are you ladies ready to explore Santorini?”

“It is one of the best places in Greece. Maybe the world,” Yiayia declared. “Nikolas and I spent a week in Oia after we were married.”

I smiled, remembering Papou’s stories about their honeymoon. He was so boisterous and affectionate that his stories about Yiayia were my favorite. Sometimes, it was hard to recognize the woman from his
