Chapter 4: Santorini
âHow was dinner?â
My eyes snapped open to find Yiayiaâs face less than half an inch from mine. I squeaked, sitting upright so quickly that we almost smacked heads.
âHow was dinner?â Yiayia repeated, seemingly unconcerned that she had just given me a minor heart attack.
I hit the light switch over the nightstand. âIt was good.â
âGood? What does this mean? Good?â She put her hands on her hips, narrowing her eyes menacingly.
âIt means that I enjoyed it. Had a good time. The food was delicious, and I probably shouldnât have had so much wine.â
I rubbed my eyes, taking note of the dull throb above my eye. The slight headache could have been the result of booze or from being woken up via interrogation by Yiayia. Who knew?
She harrumphed. âI will go with you today. But I have to be back on the ship by three.â
âWhat?â I asked, my head feeling like a spinning top. âWhy do you need to be back at the ship by three?â
âI am in a tournament with Blanche,â she explained, omitting all the necessary details.
âWhat kind of tournament, and who is Blanche?â
âMy friend that I met at lunch. We play cards with the other ladies. The ship staff are putting on a tournament for us this afternoon.â
Part of me wanted further clarification on this tournament, but the other, more selfish part of me was thrilled by the idea of being able to spend the evening alone with Apollo.
The selfish part won.
âIâm sure that wonât be a problem.â I slid my feet to the ground and stood, stretching my arms over my head. I yawned. âIs it okay if I take a shower?â
âYes, I am ready for the day.â Yiayia sat on the small couch at the end of my bed and flicked on the TV. One of the few channels offered on the cruise played old sitcoms, and Yiayia was really enjoying watching some of her favorite old shows.
Memories from last night replayed in my mind while I got ready, making me feel light-headed and giddy. I couldnât keep the smile off my face, and Yiayia kept sending me suspicious glances. She knew I was not a morning person at all, so morning smiles were rare for me. Thankfully, she didnât seem interested enough to start asking questions, and we made it out of the room without her asking me anything other than whether Iâd remembered my hat.
Apollo was waiting for us in the hallway, and I felt my smile widen when his eyes met mine. He smiled back, eyes sweeping over my face, before turning to Yiayia. He offered her his arm. âAre you ladies ready to explore Santorini?â
âIt is one of the best places in Greece. Maybe the world,â Yiayia declared. âNikolas and I spent a week in Oia after we were married.â
I smiled, remembering Papouâs stories about their honeymoon. He was so boisterous and affectionate that his stories about Yiayia were my favorite. Sometimes, it was hard to recognize the woman from his
