As the technology of Forthorthe advanced and improved, the biggest danger in space flight became human error. As such, almost all ships were designed with built-in autopilot. It was considered the industry standard, and ships could always switch over to manual operation if necessary. The autopilot function was how Theia and Ruth could operate Blue Knight with just the two of them, and it would be how Koutarou and the other girls could get back to Earth without much trouble.
âKoutarou, Koutarou, when are we going to warp?â asked Sanae excitedly.
âI think we just did, actually,â Koutarou replied.
âWhaaat?! You should have said something! How am I supposed to appreciate it otherwise?!â
âIt was over by the time I noticed it, honestly.â
Using a military-class space distortion maneuvering device, or warp engine, it took fifteen days to travel from Forthorthe to Earth. With such a lengthy voyage, however, it was customary to freeze time aboard the ship during the trip. And so two weeks literally passed in the blink of an eye for Koutarou and the other passengers, and Earth was already being displayed on the monitor in front of them.
âSo thatâs Earth, huh? Itâs a relief to see it again after all this time.â
Shizuka stared hard at the softly glowing blue planet on the screen. Sheâd seen plenty of pictures of Earth from space before, but the image of it now felt nostalgic after having been away from it for so long. It was really starting to sink in for her that the war was over.
âIn anime, the person who says that usually dies. You know, like the captain or something.â
âNot another word, Yurika-chan! Itâs got to be bad luck to say that!â
âAhahaha, sorry.â
Of course, Shizuka wasnât the only one with a smile on her face to see her home planet again. Theyâd all felt the same tense unease when theyâd left Earth to go fight, but that tension was now slowly lifting. Without realizing it, theyâd all gathered on the bridge to look at Earth as it gradually grew bigger on the monitor.
âSatomi-kun, when will we be able to get off at room 106?â
Even Harumi sounded overjoyed. Knowing that some of the other girls on board didnât have families, she was reluctant to say anything, but she was dying to see her parents again. But whether they had families or not, all of the girls felt something similar. They were all a little homesick. Shizuka couldnât wait to return to Corona House, a memento from her late parents; Yurika was eager to get her hands on her pile of manga once more; and Maki wanted to see her classmates and the girls of the cosclub. Each and every one of them had something they were looking forward to, and they were all smiling at the thought of finally being home again.
âWell, howâs it looking, Cradle?â
âThis is as close as the warp will take us. From here, it will take roughly an hour and a half until we reach stationary orbit, after which it will take approximately an hour to create a gate to the surface.
