Benefits of Using Secondary Data
Secondary data refers to data or raw information collected by other researchers. All the data collection methods discussed in Chapter 7 refer to primary data, or data that are collected for a specific purpose by the researcher. Although highly desirable, collecting your own data may not be feasible or desirable, especially when you find yourself surrounded by raw information already collected by other scientists or institutions. Using available data implies reducing the time and costs of collecting data, so this method is quite popular. This is especially beneficial when the existing data are rich in detail and include the information the researcher is searching. For example, researchers use everything from U.S. Census data to smaller-scale institutional data to make conclusions about demographic or housing trends or various characteristics of populations, such as race, ethnicity, religiosity, or social mobility.
The following are six benefits to secondary data:
Availability of information
Opportunities for replication
Protection of participants
Time effectiveness
Cost effectiveness
Large datasets
