Olly was dreading football training even more after the altercation at lunchtime. He kept his head down during his afternoon classes, pretending to be busy taking notes, and avoided Marty’s curious gaze. He had a free period last lesson and hid out in the library, trying and failing to work on an Economics assignment while he psyched himself up to face Liam again.

When it was time for practice, he paused at the door of the locker rooms and squared his shoulders, summoning up the courage to stalk in there as though he belonged.

Some of the team were already changing, but a quick glance told him Liam wasn’t there yet. Maybe Olly was paranoid, but he felt as if everyone was watching him, sidelong glances that flitted away when he tried to meet their gazes. Probably everyone had heard about the almost-fight at lunchtime.

Marty turned up just after Olly had pulled his shorts on. He arrived with Liam, who seemed to have lost his usual swagger.

“Alright.” Marty took the spot beside Olly and started getting changed.

Liam moved into the space on the other side of Olly. But he hesitated, bag in hand and a shamefaced expression on his features. “I’m sorry I was a dick earlier.”

Olly hid his surprise. He hadn’t seen that apology coming. “Yeah?”

“Yeah. Like… Marty was right. I was out of line, and I shouldn’t have said what I did. It’s none of my business anyway.”

“Um, okay.” Olly felt like he’d missed a crucial plot twist.

What was none of Liam’s business?

But he didn’t have time to ask, because Mr Buckley arrived then and started yelling at them to hurry up and get their lazy arses out on the pitch.
