Chapter Ten
Lady went over what she had experienced in detail, recounting everything that had happened to her while alone in the woods. They had time to kill while they waited on Fabia, and it was something that needed to be gone over anyway. Horace and Conners did the same.
Conners hadnât gotten lost, it seemed. He came across Horace easily enough. Horace had appeared casual, unaware that anything was wrong. He was surprised to see Conners and became rather disoriented when he realized how much time had passed, that he had been wandering in the same stretch of woods for the better part of the day.
He never had found the place where he stashed the television. He wanted to keep looking for it, but Conners convinced him that was a bad idea. They needed to get out of the woods as soon as possible and let Lady know that he was okay.
Of course, by then Lady was lost in the woods herself.
Fabia finally showed up about an hour later. They had gotten snacks by the vending machine by then. Lady had eaten three of the cupcakes Shannon had brought to work. They had left her feeling more fatigued than ever. She was slouched on the sofa, dozing off when Shannon opened the door.
Shannon was in rare form. Her expression was stony, a far cry from the smile she normally wore, especially at work. âSheâs here,â said Shannon, addressing Conners.
Conners had brought his laptop into the room. He was sitting at the table typing away on it. Lady wasnât sure what he was working on. He wouldnât tell her.
Horace was slumped on the couch beside Lady. He had asked if he could go home, but Conners had, of course, refused. Horace hadnât been booked, but he was still in a lot of trouble. Conners just had to figure how to handle all of this before he did anything officially.
Horace had asserted that it was illegal to hold him here if he wasnât being booked. Conners had agreed and told Horace that he was welcome to walk out the door now if that was what he had really wanted.
Horace had grumbled but stayed where he was. This was the best place for him right now, and they all knew it.
Now Horace sat up blinking like he had been asleep or close to it. He jumped slightly when he saw Shannon standing in the doorway. Her eyes cut to him immediately. It was a scary look, one that made even Lady look away. She was angry with Horace. There was no mistaking that.
Conners either didnât notice Shannonâs foul mood or was trying not to comment on it. âAll right,â he said with a nod, glancing up from his computer only briefly. âGo ahead and send her in, please.â
Shannon lingered in the doorway. âIâd like to be in here with her while you ask her whatever questions you have.â
Conners looked up from his computer for longer this time. He even lowered the screen a little, giving Shannon his full attention.
