CHAPTER ELEVEN

Birthday

Talia, to Hugh’s gratitude, never told anyone about how she found his lair, and as far as anyone else was concerned, he’d just been sick.

He did, however, make sure to finally invite the others to visit his lair. It quickly became one of their favorite places to hang out. They smuggled several armchairs and a coffee table into his lair so there’d be enough room for everyone to fit, and Hugh often had to boot his friends off of his desk when he needed to do homework.

Hugh had thought it would be stressful to have that much less privacy, but it was actually really nice. He was able to relax in his room in a way he wasn’t everywhere else.

He did, however, make sure to upgrade the wards to help keep noise coming from inside the room muted. Neither Godrick nor Talia was the best at the whole keeping quiet thing.

It was precisely two weeks before the summer solstice when Hugh got woken up by his friends all jumping on top of his bed. Thankfully, Godrick had the good sense not to jump on him, though Talia and Sabae were heavy enough.

“Happy birthday!” shouted the three together.

“Bwuh,” was the most cogent thing Hugh could muster. He eventually managed to boot the three of them out of his room long enough for him to change, but they were back in the instant he was done.

“Presents!” said Talia, hurling a cloth wrapped bundle at Hugh. It bounced off his chest before he caught it. Whatever it was, it was metal and heavy for its size. He rubbed the spot on his chest where it had struck him before unwrapping it. Inside the bundle was a dagger in a leather sheath. The pommel of the dagger, decorated with patterns that resembled flames, had been what had struck him in the chest.

“Did ye just throw a knife at him?” Godrick asked, grinning. Talia kicked him in the shin.

“It’s a Clan Castis dagger,” Talia said. “It’s not enchanted or anything, but it’s well made and sturdy. And we only give them out to friends of the clan, so be careful with it!”

“I will,” Hugh said, grinning.

Talia poked him hard in the stomach.

“Seriously, take care of it. You can show this knife to anyone in Clan Castis, and they’ll be honor-bound to help you. Though you can expect a lot of questions about where you got it afterwards.”

Hugh looked at the dagger, then bowed a little over it. “I’ll take good care of it, Talia. This is a better gift than I deserve.” She nodded, looking a little embarrassed.

“My turn,” Sabae said, elbowing the other two aside. She handed Hugh her present. It was a paper wrapped bundle about the size of a pillow. Hugh started to tear it open, then grinned, picked up the knife Talia had given him, and used it to cut the package open.

Inside were two books. One was a thick, leatherbound tome. Unlike Galvachren’s Bestiary, however, it was still well within normal book size.
