Two months have passed.

No time has passed.

My fasting is complete.

I am divested of excess, of appetite.

I am stripped of all but my shadow.

,

the slate is scraped clean.

Close the door on ,

on London's fading lights, on the life I led.

Barefoot, I begin on the road to truth.

Saffey moaned when she saw the infernal characters, but sat back down at her makeshift desk and motioned for Sinistery to give her the page. Her mood improved as she began translating the characters into English.

“The first two words are ‘tabula rasa,’ which means ‘clean slate.’ Looking at the line below it, I’m pretty sure I got that one right.” she said, excitement clear in her voice. “I have most of the final word. I think it’s Latin again. ‘Septimus.’ But I’m not totally sure because I don’t have the character for ‘P’ translated.”

“Septimus is a name, isn’t it?” I ventured. “It means ‘seventh one’ or something like that.”

“Seventh son is probably more accurate with the masculine suffix,” Saffey corrected me. “But color me impressed that you knew it was a name.”

“I read books too,” I said dryly.

Sinistery rubbed her eyes and groaned. “So now we have to hunt down somebody’s seventh son in London and close a door on him? See why I didn’t show this to you guys right away? It would have distracted us from cracking the séance circle. But you see it now and it just creates more questions.”

I was certain I hadn’t liked the fact that Sinistery had withheld the page until she did, but I agreed with her conclusions. It would have distracted us from, and perhaps delayed, the cracking of the séance circle, and it certainly created more questions now.

“This entry seems to be documenting the conclusion of his travels. Wicker has done what he needed to prepare and now what? ‘The road to truth.’ He’s leaving London, and headed back to Maine to try to break into Hell?” Saffey spoke aloud as she thought through the message in the journal entry.

“That seems like the most likely spot given the door in room 13,” I agreed. “Close the door. Another portal, perhaps? Or, given we’ve been following Wicker from location to location, could Septimus be a place?”

Sinistery perked up at that interpretation. “That’s possible—a building name or a club, maybe? If we were in New York, I’d probably have ideas about where to go next.”

I chewed on my cheek in thought. “None of us knows London well enough to recognize it as a place reference, but I know who might.”

Saffey gave me a big smile and wiggled her eyebrows. “And we’re meeting her at the Horned God this afternoon.”
