For the first time in a long time, the evening felt like the beginning of a new chapter. At least Marko felt the breath of possibility of it. The last time he’d felt a similar yen for transformation was when he’d discovered Jade’s loss of memory after Zino’s interrogation. The interrogation had been in defiance of his wishes, and he ought to have gotten rid of Zino then. It was a mistake he’d paid dearly for.

But, in discovering Jade’s amnesia, it had occurred to him that he could take his mistakes and his shortcomings and simply hide them away. He could create, he could manufacture the relationship with Jade that he’d long wanted. He could, in essence, paint a canvas of the life he desired and step into it. And that is what he had done. For a while, the illusion held, although there had always been a fragile quality to it. Like a bubble made of the thinnest glass, while floating in the air, it was beautiful; if dropped, it was decimated beyond repair.

As Marko dressed for dinner, he forced himself to accept two truths. First, his marriage to Jade had been an imaginary tale they’d both played at for a short while. Second, he’d based the relationship on an untruth, so it had always been doomed to fail. Those facts did not alter what he felt for her, but, at least, he could begin to come to terms with it. He could and would learn from the painful lesson. Never again would he base a relationship on a lie.
