Chapter 17

Jonas watched as the huge metal rings spun around the airship. As they did so, they occasionally stirred up the fluffy clouds as they flew a little lower. He just couldn’t figure out the magical structure and how it kept the giant egg that was carrying them in the air.

After lunch, he had ventured alone into the corridors of the first class. A few times he had passed the tightly locked doors to the lower levels and even there the stench of urine had overwhelmed him. Much more impressive was the exaggerated way the floor, furniture and walls were decorated. It reminded him very much of the building and fashion styles from the baroque era. But it was also different. No wigs were worn, but makeup was very conspicuous. The face painted white and eye shadow glowed in bright colors. This applied to both the men and the women.

Again he pressed his nose against the thick cool glass. He could stare into the deep blue of the sky forever, but he was soon expected by Rulliobh. He turned away from the window and strolled down a corridor from which he thought he had come. At that moment, one of the dark wooden doors opened. Carved into its knob was a creepy lion’s head, staring at him with wide-open eyes. A white-robed figure stepped out, it’s back turned to him and walking in the same direction he was going. Jonas kept his distance as he continued walking. Upon closer inspection, he noticed that what he had thought was a hood was a lush mop of long white hair. Jonas tried to resist the urge to follow the person. But why should he do that? He was bored anyway.

Careful not to make a sound on the carpeted floor, he followed the person. Moving silently and elegantly, the person almost seemed like hot wax, the way the robes of the delicate silk-like fabric glided across the floor. Like milk, Jonas thought. At that moment, exactly what he had wanted to avoid happened. He sneezed. The white figure stopped and turned slowly and meaningfully to face him.

A man. No, the leaf-shaped ears. An elf.

He was grotesquely beautiful. Jonas screwed up his face. It was difficult for him to breathe... He had to avert his eyes. He looked at the ground. But then his bare feet appeared there. Cool hands clasped his chin, and he was forced to look up again into the face of the other. How had he moved so fast? The ruby red eyes were almost distorted to slits. Was it the bright daylight that fell through the window?

“What’s the matter, human? Have you taken too many tinctures?”

A deep melodic voice. Jonas’ skin burned on his cheeks where he was touched. With his fingertips, the stranger stroked his neck, where his blood pulsed. His breathing was even faster, and a dizziness overcame him. It was almost like when Rulliobh spoke in the dining hall a few days ago. He wriggled out of the touch and took a few steps away.
