The next morning, Sasha was eating breakfast when she received a call from her assistant.

“What do you mean you to set up a book signing for me? Lana, I told you I’m on vacation.

“I’m sorry, Miss Lambert, but I’d sent out the request to the bookstore when you mentioned you’d be in Raleigh. I didn’t read your other message about not wanting to set up anything until a day later. By then, they’d already cleared a spot for you. They’re super excited you’re coming, so I didn’t want to cancel it,” she added in a rush. “I’m so sorry, Miss Lambert.”

Sasha tamped down her annoyance. It wasn’t her assistant’s fault she’d made last-minute plans. “It’s fine, Lana,” Sasha assured her. “And please stop calling me Miss Lambert. Sasha is fine.”

“Okay. Again, I truly apologize.”

“Don’t worry about it.” Sasha pushed her plate aside. “So, what are the details?”

A few minutes later, her call with Lana ended. While she added the event to the calendar on her cell phone, she thought about her last book signing and couldn’t help but think about her publicist. Considering the circumstances, it was a poorly thought-out prank, and although it made for good publicity for the book, it had started a series of events that were only getting worse. Sasha sat there racking her brain over the possibility that Jewel was behind more than just that dead scorpion delivery. She’d dismissed her father and Pierce’s concerns that Jewel’s involvement went deeper, but what if it did?

Her forehead crinkled in concentration as she suddenly recalled the details surrounding her confrontation with Milo’s wife. A wave of worry shot through the pit of her stomach. Bolting out of her chair, Sasha began pacing. Andromeda had mentioned the dead scorpions as a parting shot. Was Jewel on her payroll, too? Andromeda had threatened she’d go to any lengths to get what she wanted. Was her publicist merely the catalyst for Andromeda’s machinations?

Right now, she had more questions than answers. Jewel and Andromeda being potential partners in terrorizing her left her feeling deflated. With a cry of anguish, Sasha collapsed back in the kitchen chair. This was steadily becoming more than she could handle. It was just one nightmare after another, with no end in sight. Sasha closed her eyes and just focused on breathing in long, strong breaths of air. She’d just wanted to relax and enjoy her family while in Raleigh with no thoughts of the pandemonium she’d left behind in London. Now she was going to be at a signing for several hours the next evening. At first, Sasha hadn’t wanted to go. She hadn’t brought her favorite pen or the other things she liked to have with her at signings, but maybe it was a blessing in disguise. For a short while she could get her mind off her troubles and just enjoy talking about something she loved. Being in her hometown and meeting people who had come out to support her might be just the balm she needed to soothe her frazzled nerves.
