WE MADE LOVE AGAIN in the middle of the night and finally got up around 10 a.m. I stayed for a leisurely breakfast.
âIâll want to head off home soon,â I said. âI have washing and ironing to do, and have to get ready for the new job on Monday.â
âThen I can drive you to the station. We can stop at the office on the way, and you can collect your box of crystal and take it home with you.â
âThatâs a great idea. Thank you.â
âI need to spend a few hours in the office today, preparing the new budget. It might take all day. Otherwise we could have gone out together tonight.â
âThen when shall I see you again?â
He paused before replying. Please let me see you again, I thought. Donât make excuses and drop me so soon.
âIâll call you one evening in the week. And you can tell me all about the new job.â
I wasnât too confident about his reply, but I didnât want to push him.
We drove to the office and I picked up my farewell gift from the old firm, and then we drove on to the station; I only had ten minutes to wait for the train. Just before I climbed on board, he kissed me and smiled, âDonât make any plans for next Saturday evening.â
So much had happened over the last week. I had met Peter again on Monday; on Tuesday I had watched David screw Sandra in the basement; on Wednesday I handed in my notice, and I left the firm today, Friday. My head was spinning. Life never raced along this fast.
And on Monday next week I would see Peter again. He was so different from David, but it had been five years since I had lived with him and, I reflected, people can change over time. Would I be able to recapture the love that we once shared? And what about David, who had confessed that he had wanted me for so long? I couldnât cast him casually aside. I was so confused. After a week of so many changes, I hardly knew what I wanted.
