The reaction involves redox. Atoms of Al have been oxidised to Al3+ ions by the loss of electrons, while Fe3+ ions have taken these electrons and have been reduced to Fe atoms.

The reaction occurs because aluminium is more reactive than iron and more readily forms ions. So, aluminium has formed Al3+ ions at the expense of Fe3+ ions, which have been reduced to iron. The reaction can be regarded as a displacement reaction in which a more reactive metal, higher in the reactivity series, has displaced a less reactive metal lower in the reactivity series, from its oxide. Displacement reactions can be used to determine the reactivity of the two metals.
