Feeling Just a Bit at a Time

In this exercise, we want to help you learn to feel your feelings, but without overwhelming yourself. You’ll use a strategy called distancing to control the intensity of your feelings. Distancing involves using a mental image to slow down your response, push the emotion further away, watch the emotion pass by, or take a pause to change the intensity of your feelings.

There are several mental images you can use:

Imagine yourself sitting in a train, watching through the window and seeing the scenery go by, with your distressing mental image as a part of the scenery that’s receding away—so that there is space between you and the distressing image.
