CHAPTER 14

REESE

The next day, Reese checked in at the office but headed out early with information on Heather Crawford’s whereabouts.

Considering her job at the club, he decided it was best to catch her at home where he could sit down and talk without a crowd or loud music blaring.

He arrived at a small apartment complex and looked for her unit. When he found it, he parked out front and went to her door and knocked.

He could hear footsteps clomping and saw the front curtain move as if she were checking to see who he was.

Not knowing what to expect, he was surprised when a doe-eyed girl with a towel on her head opened the door. “Can I help you?” she asked, giving him a little bit of attitude that seemed like a warning not to mess with her.

He took out his badge. “I’m Officer Milo with New Orleans police. I’m looking for Heather Crawford?”

“Yeah, why?” She looked him up and down suspiciously.

“I’m here to ask some questions about a man I’m investigating. I think she can help me.” He tried to look past her into the house.

“I’m Heather,” she said, taking him by surprise. She barely looked eighteen, and not at all what he expected. “And if this is about Billy Preston, I don’t know where he is these days. We haven’t talked in years.”

“No, it’s about Daniel Davenport. Could you step out and talk to me a minute?”

She made a face and shook her head. “No, but you can come inside. I’m waiting on my toenails to dry.” She threw the door open wider.

Reese looked down at her perfectly manicured toes. Even though she was dressed in yoga pants with a slouchy shirt, he could see why Daniel Davenport had a thing for her. He would have, too, if he were about fifteen years younger.

Reese followed her in, and she shut the door before walking on her heels over to the sofa, where she offered him a seat. “Make yourself at home. My roommate is sleeping. She worked an all-nighter.”

“I’ll try to keep it down.”

“Don’t worry,” she said, waving her hand dismissively. “She can sleep through anything. What do you want to know about Daniel?”

“To start, could you tell me how well you know him?”

“Too well,” she said, giving him a regretful look. “Just to make it clear, I didn’t know he was married until I had already fallen in love with him. Isn’t that the way it always happens?”

“So you were in love?”

“Yes. But only because I thought he was divorced.”

“How did that make you feel?”

“You sound like my shrink asking me about my feelings.”

“Sorry. I’m just trying to understand the situation.”

“I felt like a fool. He assured me it was long over with his wife. But I found out the hard way that wasn’t the case.” She wrapped her arms around herself as if it still hurt her to think about it.

“Do you mind telling me what happened? The whole story?”

“Just one day, he showed up with another girl.
