It seems that the genes involved in explaining normal differences in intelligence are common variations, numbered in their thousands, each with a small effect on brainpower. But it is possible for some genetic differences to have profound effects on intelligence. These are the large genetic errors (mutations) that can cause learning disabilities by making major disruptions to the normal functioning of cells. Many genetic disorders, like Down Syndrome or Fragile X Syndrome, involve a substantial intellectual impairment, and are often associated with older parental age. Older parents pass on larger numbers of more minor genetic errors, too, and some researchers have suggested that these might cause small decreases in the IQs of their children. There is currently dispute in the scientific literature about the size – and, indeed, the existence – of this effect (Arslan et al., 2014).
