The West of Scotland Twenty-07 Study
In this study, Geoff Der and I reported the correlation between reaction time and intelligence. It is the only such study in a large sample of people who are representative of their background population. It also has decent, if short, tests of intelligence and reaction time.
The Twenty-07 Study was named that way because it started in 1987 and was planned to end after twenty years, in 2007. It recruited people from in and around Glasgow, Scotlandâs largest city. The participants were, at the start of the study, aged 15, 35, or 55 years old. Therefore, one can calculate that, after twenty years of follow-up, the two younger groups would reach the age that the next one above them had been at the start of the study. The overall aim of the study was to find out more about the health differences between the social classes across the adult life course. The data we used to study intelligence and reaction time came from wave four of the Twenty-07 Study, which took place in 2000 and 2001. At that time, the three groups were aged 30, 50, and 69 years old. The number of people who had full data for analysis was 714, 813, and 669 for the three age groups, respectively.
The participants took a test of their reaction time. The device used is shown in Figure 15. The rectangle at the top left is a liquid crystal display where numbers appear when the test is running. It is also used, later, by the tester, to see the results. The start button is used by the tester to start the test. There are five response buttons at the bottom, with the numbersâfrom left to rightâ1, 2, 0, 3, and 4 beside them. These are used by the participant to make responses.
