This is so that when the gun moves back under the force of recoil, it does not rise up into the cheek bone. Also, this parallel area makes allowance for the different head positions when taking the various shots called for when shooting different quarry. When taking lower shots, your head will creep forward; when taking an overhead or passing shot, your head will creep back and when shooting at eye level, your face will take the middle position. So having a parallel measurement “at face” creates a single sight picture on every shot made.
