Golden Gate Park is perfect for whiling away time out of doors, filled with fields, gardens, and lakes and home to the de Young Museum. Haight Street, meanwhile, is a counterculture landmark cluttered with thrift shops and cheap eateries.

DISTANCE: 3 miles (5km)

TIME: A full day

START: de Young Museum

END: Haight-Ashbury

POINTS TO NOTE: Although Golden Gate Park is immense, do not worry too much about getting lost in the wilderness. Paths are well marked, with signs and maps pointing you in the direction of various major attractions. This route begins at the de Young Museum. The 5 and 21 buses stop at 8th and Fulton streets, just outside the park. Walk into the park and turn right on John F. Kennedy Drive to reach the museum’s tower entrance. To return downtown from the Haight, take the 7 or 71 buses that run along the full length of Haight Street, or the 6, which makes its first stop on Haight at Masonic.
