First-time visitors are invited to taste screech, the local distillation, at a “screeching-in” ceremony held in town halls. A scroll is issued as proof of passage.

Exploring the province

The independent traveler will need a car. There are bus services to virtually all locations, but the farther off the beaten path, the more infrequent the service. There are still many locations that are best reached or only accessible by boat. The main road in Newfoundland is Highway 1 (Trans-Canada Highway), which runs through Newfoundland on an indirect path between Channel-Port aux Basques 1 [map] in the west (terminus for the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia), to St John's in the east. It's 905km (562 miles) long and is the lifeline of the province. Right off the Trans-Canada Highway, 200km (137 miles) northeast of Channel-Port aux Basques, Corner Brook 2 [map] is the scenic business center for Newfoundland's west coast.
