Look for colorful murals painted by artist Roy Purcell on boulders outside Chloride. Follow Tennessee Avenue into the hills about a mile from town.

Switching from the modern to the historic, the colorful mining legacy of western Arizona is well preserved in Chloride 3 [map], 20 miles (32km) north of Kingman on US Highway 93 and another 4 miles (6.5km) east via Chloride Road. Home to 2,000 people during its 1860s boom, Chloride’s name derives from the silver-chloride ore extracted from mines in the nearby Cerbat Mountains. Only 250 residents remain in the rustic, frontier-style buildings, but at the end of June each year the town comes alive during Old Miners Day . Festivities are marked by burro (donkey) rides, a swap meet, a crafts fair, and a parade. Gunfights are held every Saturday at noon (every other Saturday in summer).
