A hike to the Root Glacier.

Only a small percentage of those who drive the McCarthy Road actually visit the park’s awesome backcountry. Most are content to hang out in McCarthy, take hikes to the nearby Kennicott Glacier and Root Glacier, or travel some 4 miles (7km) to the abandoned Kennecott copper mining camp (the original company misspelled the name). Until 1997 visitors could reach McCarthy-Kennecott only by crossing the glacially fed Kennicott River on hand-pulled trams. These historic trams have been replaced by a footbridge that makes the crossing considerably easier. Locals have resisted a vehicular bridge fearing it might open up their community to large-scale ‘industrial’ tourism. Recently, however, a privately owned and gate-locked vehicle bridge was built down river. To obtain a key to the gate, whether for a day or an entire summer season, locals must pay a $300-a-year fee to the Rollin family, who own the property and equipment responsible for supporting the bridge.
