Present Time

A couple of days passed and there were no leads on who had attacked Stella. The official meeting with Liam had once again been pushed back and the other girls were beginning to get restless. Everyone was on edge, especially when they found out that Liam had personally been caring for Stella’s injuries. I’d seen him coming and going from her room on several occasions in the last forty-eight hours. We hadn’t spoken much since the attack. He was busy and he hadn’t sought me out again. I had yet to officially agree to his proposal, and since he hadn’t brought it up again, I was beginning to wonder if he’d changed his mind.

Those thoughts and others rushed through my mind as I got out of the shower. I had just finished dressing and had Missy’s leash in hand when there was a knock on my door. I opened it, and to my surprise, Stella stood there.

“Hey,” she said, leaning against the door frame, her arms wrapped around herself. “Headed out?”

I nodded. “Missy needs her morning walk. Do you want to come?”

She shook her head. “I better not. Liam still wants me to keep off my feet as much as possible.”

I stepped into the hall and shut the door behind me. “How is your ankle? Is the pain gone?”

“Pretty much,” she said, walking next to me. Her limp was almost completely gone, which seemed like a good sign. “It’s still a little swollen, but Liam said it was a really bad break, which is why it’s taken so long to get back to normal.” She sighed. “Hopefully I won’t be hobbling around tomorrow night at the party.”

I stopped and turned to face her. “Wait, the meeting is happening tomorrow? How do you know?”

A blush tinged her cheeks and she ducked her head. “Liam told me earlier. He mentioned something about needing to leave soon. I think he’s running out of time to make a decision and needs to get the ball rolling, you know?”

I nodded, trying to hide my concern at how much more she knew about Liam now than I did. “You two have spent some time together over the last of couple days, haven’t you?” I asked as I started walking again.

“Mostly in a doctor-patient way,” she said. “Nothing romantic, or even very personal, if you’re concerned that I’m getting special treatment.”

“No, of course not. I wasn’t concerned about that. I was honestly just asking. You’re a great catch.” I forced a bright smile. “I would understand if he wanted more time with you.”

We got to the stairs and Stella stopped. “I should get back to my room.”

“Okay.” I tossed a wave over my shoulder. “See you later.”

The garden was cool, and I wrapped my arms around myself as I strolled along the hedges. I fiddled with my ring as I walked. My thoughts drifted to Liam and Stella. They were definitely better suited for each other, but this wasn’t about who would make the best wife. At least not for me.
