Present Time
A couple of days passed and there were no leads on who had attacked Stella. The official meeting with Liam had once again been pushed back and the other girls were beginning to get restless. Everyone was on edge, especially when they found out that Liam had personally been caring for Stellaâs injuries. Iâd seen him coming and going from her room on several occasions in the last forty-eight hours. We hadnât spoken much since the attack. He was busy and he hadnât sought me out again. I had yet to officially agree to his proposal, and since he hadnât brought it up again, I was beginning to wonder if heâd changed his mind.
Those thoughts and others rushed through my mind as I got out of the shower. I had just finished dressing and had Missyâs leash in hand when there was a knock on my door. I opened it, and to my surprise, Stella stood there.
âHey,â she said, leaning against the door frame, her arms wrapped around herself. âHeaded out?â
I nodded. âMissy needs her morning walk. Do you want to come?â
She shook her head. âI better not. Liam still wants me to keep off my feet as much as possible.â
I stepped into the hall and shut the door behind me. âHow is your ankle? Is the pain gone?â
âPretty much,â she said, walking next to me. Her limp was almost completely gone, which seemed like a good sign. âItâs still a little swollen, but Liam said it was a really bad break, which is why itâs taken so long to get back to normal.â She sighed. âHopefully I wonât be hobbling around tomorrow night at the party.â
I stopped and turned to face her. âWait, the meeting is happening tomorrow? How do you know?â
A blush tinged her cheeks and she ducked her head. âLiam told me earlier. He mentioned something about needing to leave soon. I think heâs running out of time to make a decision and needs to get the ball rolling, you know?â
I nodded, trying to hide my concern at how much more she knew about Liam now than I did. âYou two have spent some time together over the last of couple days, havenât you?â I asked as I started walking again.
âMostly in a doctor-patient way,â she said. âNothing romantic, or even very personal, if youâre concerned that Iâm getting special treatment.â
âNo, of course not. I wasnât concerned about that. I was honestly just asking. Youâre a great catch.â I forced a bright smile. âI would understand if he wanted more time with you.â
We got to the stairs and Stella stopped. âI should get back to my room.â
âOkay.â I tossed a wave over my shoulder. âSee you later.â
The garden was cool, and I wrapped my arms around myself as I strolled along the hedges. I fiddled with my ring as I walked. My thoughts drifted to Liam and Stella. They were definitely better suited for each other, but this wasnât about who would make the best wife. At least not for me.
