CODY

William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody left an indelible mark on western history, and nowhere is it more alive than in his namesake town of Cody. In this historic western community, Buffalo Bill is the beginning, middle, and end. He played every role from visionary, fund-raiser, negotiator, and marketer to celebrity in order to put “Cody City” on the map in 1896.

In his day, while traveling with his Wild West Show, Buffalo Bill was an authentic western hero. He was famous as a Pony Express rider, a scout, a hunter, and an entrepreneur, and he was a showman who became a friend to presidents and kings, senators and governors, and many of the country’s most influential businessmen. With his connections he was included in economic developments that would later shape the West. It was no mistake that the Burlington Northern Railroad led to Cody in 1901 or that Yellowstone National Park’s east entrance was opened around that time as well. When the world’s first national park was founded in 1872, Buffalo Bill smelled the potential fortune in an area he came to know during his youth. As a result he built his own lodge, Pahaska Tepee, just yards from Yellowstone’s eastern boundary—a place that still bustles with tourist traffic both summer and winter. In anticipation of the visitors who would come on the railroad, W. F. Cody built the now-historic Irma Hotel, with a restaurant and saloon to cater to all his guests’ needs.
