The red and blue police cruiser lights flashed outside of Lou’s single room. She was painting her nails and dealing with her self-care while Chad looked on when she noticed the lights. She stopped what she was doing and went to her window.

Outside her window were a group of police cruisers, just like she had expected. Lou felt a chill go through her body anyway. What was going on now at the inn? Did everyone’s favorite raccoon familiar, Moscow, cause trouble again? Just as she was running through the possibilities, Lou heard boots coming up the stairs and a loud banging on a room door.

Lou grabbed her robe off of the hook that was on the door. It was a light pink robe with baby roses that Lou put on each time she left her room. She opened the door to see policemen flooding the hallway. Chad rubbed against her legs, watching alongside her.

Owen Marsh was the lead, knocking on Alberto’s door. When Alberto didn’t answer immediately, he nodded to the men at his side. The policemen barged into his room.

She could hear Alberto’s protest as they got him out of bed and dragged him out to the hallway. Lou left her room and left the door ajar. The rest of the family were all standing outside their doors in the family wing. Theodora and Penelope seemed to be the most frightened. They had their hands covering their mouths, and they were as pale as ghosts.

“Alberto Salas, you have the right to remain silent...”

Lou could not believe her ears. They were arresting her beloved stepfather right before her eyes. They handcuffed Alberto, and Lou felt her heart breaking. Alberto’s face was somber. But he did not arrest, just doing what the police instructed.

When it was time to put on handcuffs, Alberto outstretched his hands. Lou felt a cold jab at her heart when she heard the handcuffs click close. Alberto closed his eyes.

Uncle Marcus and Aunt Mags said nothing as the officers walked Alberto past their door. Aunt Penelope and Theodora started to cry. Lou was in a panic.

The next thing she knew, she was demanding information from Owen Marsh.

“Look, Lou. I understand this is difficult. But I have a job to do, and I’m going to insist that you let me do it. If you don’t, you can find yourself in handcuffs with your stepfather, but I’d much prefer not to go that route.”

Lou watched in horror, not knowing what else to do, as they led Alberto down the stairs and out to the waiting police cruiser. She and Chad followed along, standing on the porch to watch them go. They nearly ran into Moscow, who was waiting on the porch, trying to see the commotion inside.

The three of them watched silently as Alberto was walked by the police to the car. He didn’t fight back or protest against the officers, sliding into the back seat willingly. The place where criminals go, Lou thought. But her stepfather was no criminal.
