CHAPTER 16

The One Living Inside You

Three hours earlier

Fear increased Amy’s anxiety so much that she began hearing voices inside her head. That or the countless cups of hot coffee she poured down her throat, in hope they’ll push away the pressure.

With every moment that passed, she was more convinced Hannah was in the forest. That voice inside her head kept repeating, Go to the forest! Go to the forest! Impossible to ignore, like a buzzing in her ear. It reached a critical point when she went into the bathroom, turned on the hot water, and saw Hannah’s favorite shampoo. She had to go and find her.

By the time she called Benton, she’d already made up her mind.

The call wasn’t about asking for help or advice, but about telling him where she was, in case she didn’t come back. She went out on the hallway and let herself slip, her back against the door.

Amy realized Hannah couldn’t have been on the road to Downhill. She’d left her at home the night she disappeared and took their only car. If Hannah was in the forest, she’d had to jump there directly from inside the house. The trip to Downhill wasn’t necessary.

The water kept pouring into the tub, with a calming white noise. It reminded her of the sound of the river. It didn’t take her long to cross worlds herself, the inner voice guiding her.

She arrived in the forest, in a place resembling the one she’d been to the other day. Big trees. Damp smell. Air squeezing the life out of her. She wasn’t a fan of the forest; on the contrary, she hated it. It was a dark world, a world of pain and despair. Her own tastes weren’t enough to stop her, and she started walking at once, searching for Hannah.

She hadn’t gone far before they came into sight. Ten shadows surrounded her from every direction. Amy had no idea what to do, or how to fight them.

Don’t worry; help is on its way. The voice inside her was much more coherent now. If at one point she doubted it was real, the skepticism had abandoned her by now. Not that it was enough to push the fear away; she was terrified, not for her own life, but for Hannah’s.

Two other beings appeared from behind the shadows. They screamed, but their shout wasn’t normal. It was a roar that blasted the shadows away, leaving behind a black smoke, which dispersed quickly. They were the help the voice had mentioned. Amy didn’t want to move, waiting to see how they would react to her presence.

One of them left at once, while the other turned to her, with a big smile. “I’m so happy to see you again!” he said.

Amy didn’t understand. Again? “I… I’ve never seen you before in my life,” she said nervously.

“I wasn’t talking to you, Amy,” the man replied.

Amy circled on the spot and saw nobody else was there. “Who were you talking to?”

“To the one inside you,” he answered.
