Chapter Fifteen.

Humidity clung to the night air like vines to a trellis. Overhead, clouds gathered in angry swirls to hide the moon. Flashes of lightning illuminated the mountains of the Shenandoah Valley. The scent of rain was strong. It was a perfect night for Aaron and Michael.

The two friends stood at the tall chain link fence, dressed in black, five feet from a no trespass warning.

Their rental car was twenty-five feet away. It looked like the car had a flat, which was on the side of the car facing away from the road. A flat tire lay in plain sight on the ground near the jack. But there was no flat, and although the car appeared jacked up, it was ready to drive.

“You're sure these suits will work?” Michael asked as he readjusted his shirt and pulled his collar high over the material of the exercise/sauna suits they had purchased earlier at a sporting goods and hunting equipment store.

“They'll work. The infrared sensors' sensitivity are set high enough so that a small animal's body heat won't set them off. Our faces and hands are all that's exposed. These exercise suits are thermal suits that will seal our body heat inside. When we're closer, we'll put the masks on.”

“And sweat to death.”

“Not if we move fast enough. Ready?” Aaron asked.

“Almost.” Michael reached to the small of his back. His hand dipped into his waistband, and when it reappeared, he held a Smith and Wesson .38. The pistol's blue barrel was almost invisible in the darkness.

“Where the hell did you get that?” Aaron asked.

“The same place you got yours, White Man— from my suitcase. I put it there before we left Phoenix.”

“Michael ...” Aaron began but stopped himself. Since Michael was exposing himself to danger because of him, he wasn't about to tell him to leave the gun in the car. “Be careful.” Then he touched the butt of his own pistol to reassure himself it was there.

“Hey, you too. Now, hand me the clippers.”

It took them four and a half minutes to get through the fence, and after using garbage ties to reseal it from any casual inspection, they headed toward the research buildings a half mile away.

“How much time before Lowell gets wise and comes back?”

“Another hour, if we're lucky,” Aaron replied as he continued working his way forward. “If I read the man right,” he added.

Captain Thomas Lowell drove the lead car, his thoughts centered on the two men he was going to meet. He felt just as betrayed as he knew Blaine and Norris would be. They had trusted him, and he was about to show them how misplaced their trust was.

When he'd returned from his meeting with Blaine, he'd found two senior National Security Agency men waiting for him. The agents who had been assigned to the Sperry Compound when Lowell had reported Blaine's first contact—had demanded a full report of his meeting with Blaine.

“They switched cars. I had to go with Blaine in his car.”

“We heard that on the bug in your car.
