Odradek lurks in the transitional spaces in and around the house — “the garret, the stairway, the lobbies, the entrance hall. Often for months he is not to be seen; then he has presumably moved into other houses; but he always comes faithfully back to our house again.” The narrator tries speaking to Odradek — “And where do you live?” “No fixed abode, [Odradek] says and laughs; but it is only the kind of laughter that has no lungs behind it. It sounds rather like the rustling of fallen leaves.” Benjamin calls Odradek “the most singular bastard which the prehistoric world has begotten with guilt.” The narrator insists that Odradek “does no harm to anyone that one can see” — and yet he despairs of ever managing to escape him:
