He didn’t know if he believed her acquiescence—it seemed too easy, given how upset she was. He was on guard, paying close attention to how she behaved when he brought her back into his bedroom suite.

“You sure you’re okay?” he asked, bending at the knee to be eye level with her. “I really fucked that up, Bella. I knew better, and I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. Really.”

Bullshit. Kennedy Jones should be handing him his ass for putting her in that position, but she wasn’t. It was Ruby Rhodes who was standing before him, and he didn’t like it. Ruby Rhodes was fake. She was also about to be punished.

Grabbing a handful of hair, he yanked her down to her knees.

“Ow, Dante! Fuck!”

She moved to unbuckle his belt, then paused with her hand on the leather. Looking up at him, she whispered, “Why did you call me that?”

“Why are you behaving like her?”

Dropping her eyes, she tried to act offended. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

He tilted her chin with his index finger. “No? Are you sure?”

Her only reply was the gentle shaking of her head.

He sat on the edge of the bed and patted his lap, and she scurried to lay across it with no further prompting. Dante flipped her skirt up and slowly removed the plug from her ass—they wouldn’t be needing that now—then stroked her inner thighs using both hands.

“Well, then, let me tell you what I think is going on. I think you’re back to pretending with me.” She stiffened at his words, and he pulled on her biceps so she was sitting up next to him on the mattress. “I won’t have it, little one.”

“What do you want from me?” She leapt off the bed and began to pace in front of him. “I’ve told you I can’t be with you, but you refuse to listen. You think somehow we can make it work, that love will conquer all, yet you insult me by discussing your criminal activities right in front of me—practically daring me to do something about it. I’m a fucking CIA agent, Dante. My job is to arrest you. You’re making a mockery of my existence.”

“I’m not making a mockery out of you. I just got too comfortable after working with you all afternoon on Emerald Woods. I told you I was sorry, Bella. I fucked up and put you in a position I never should have.”

“I think you did it on purpose, to test me.”

Dante was silent for a moment as he pondered her accusation. When he finally spoke, it was low and quiet, and she stood at the corner of the bed, picking at a thread on the bedspread’s stitching and listening without looking at him.
