On a free tour of Subaru of Indiana, visitors walk along catwalks above the production lines and observe workers, robots, and some gigantic machines assemble complete automobiles. The plant currently produces three Subaru modelsâthe Legacy, Outback, and Tribecaâand, under contract with Toyota, the Toyota Camry. According to the company, this plant was designed with tours in mind. Tours are generally offered at 9 a.m.; reservations must be made at least 2 weeks in advance by calling (765) 449-6250. In 1936, when our country was in the depths of the Great Depression, Frank Lloyd Wright developed an architectural style he called Usonian (an abbreviation for âUnited States of North Americaâ). The innovative style reflected Wrightâs desire to create a distinctly American style that was affordable for the âcommon people.â To control costs, Usonian homes had no attics, no basements, and very little ornamentation, but they still displayed the unique beauty of a Wright design.
One of the most pristine examples of this style can be seen today at 1301 Woodland Ave. in West Lafayette. Known as Samara, the house was built for John and Catherine Christian, who still occupy it and maintain it in accordance with the architectâs exacting standards. Wright personally supervised every detail of the homeâs construction in 1956, designing and specifying all aspects of the furnishings and landscaping.
