Chapter 8
The next day, Nate was sitting in a rocking chair that he’d dragged out onto the porch. Leaning back, his body wrapped in a thick jacket and a winter hat and his feet up on the railing, he looked for signs of how the unfolding chaos would take shape in its second day. Making sure he was making his contribution to it, he raised a bb gun he’d found in the basement and fired at the next car that came screaming down the street.
Plink.
It looked like he’d hit the sedan’s side paneling, which would probably leave a nice dent. A group of kids wandered along the sidewalk on the other side of the road. Nate held the gun firm against his chest and looked through the scope. Firing, he shot one kid in the butt, making him jump three feet in the air before howling and running off with his friends. Nate chortled to himself.
“Nice shot,” Eve said, closing the front door behind her. She had on her usual jeans and a jacket, though the temperature didn’t seem to get to her much. Nate eyed her up and down before going back to surveying the targets passing in front of him.
“So are you going to lounge around all day, or do you want to get out and have some fun?” she posed, cocking her hips to the side and leaning against the doorframe. Nate retained a sense of suspicion.
“What do you got in mind, sweet cheeks?” he asked in a gruff, manly way. Eve sunk her hands into her pockets and ventured a little closer.
“There’s a lot going on out there now. Looting, National Guard standoffs, Kool-Aid drinking cults. Take your pick. We could go find a nice car to steal and start our own little destruction derby,” Eve suggested.
None of these options did much to rouse Nate’s interest though, making Eve frown. He wasn’t even paying that much attention to her.
“Don’t you gotta go deal with that Nathan you’re so hung up on?” he said at last.
“Nope!” Eve protested, rushing over and dropping to her knees beside the chair so she could get closer to Nate’s line of sight. “Trust me, this isn’t about him at all. He’s just a means to an end.”
“You expect me to believe that?” Nate scoffed, taking a careless shot with the bb gun at another car cruising past.
Eve got up, brushed herself off, and seized on his comment to bring a smirk back onto her face.
“What, are you jealous?”
“No,” Nate said, rolling his eyes.
“Of course not. But let me tell you what this is really about. Or maybe a single question would do it. How did you feel about Sarah?” she asked.
This managed to get Nate’s attention, and he shifted to glare at Eve. His resistance was obvious, but what wasn’t so clear was the way he felt about the woman who had appeared out of nowhere and taken roost in his home for the past ten years.
“What do you mean?” Nate asked, and Eve leaned close and put both her hands on the armrest.
