"And now you're just going to let her go?" Jewel asked and handed Gabe a plate of food.

"Well, no. They are going to track her, follow where she goes. The witches seem to think the ritual will allow us to keep her under observation, regardless of whatever the strigoi is using to cloak the place." Gabe forked some pasta into his mouth and choked the undercooked food down.

"How come you don't talk to me about this stuff usually?" Jewel looked up from her food and placed her fork down on the table. "Is it because you're not supposed to, or you think it will upset me? I mean, not that you owe me any explanation, or anything. It's just that we eat together every night, and you talk about everything that goes on during the day, but never anything to do with that… thing."

Gabe swallowed the food in his mouth and placed the fork down. He wanted to be sure of what he was going to say, before he opened his mouth. There was still enough of his blood in her veins for her to peer in, but Jewel was good about staying out. She gave Gabe enough privacy to sort his thoughts, waiting patiently until he spoke.

"After what you went through, after what I saw in your mind, I don't know what the right thing to do is. My first instinct is to tell you everything, share anything and everything, with you. But then… I guess, I worry that some things will upset you. You don't deserve that, Jewel. You've been through enough."

"It wasn't the strigoi that took me. Telling me about that stuff isn't going to hurt me. Besides, you can't keep what happened from upsetting me. I can't fight it. It's with me everyday." Jewel's eyes dropped and she continued. "I just want to feel normal again."

"I'm sorry. I don't want to make the same mistakes I made with… I mean, I don't—"

"Gabe, you can talk about Gwen."

"I don't want to compare you with her. I don't want to keep seeing the similarities, but I…" Gabe got up from the table and turned toward the door. "I'm sorry. I can't do this." With that, he disappeared from the room.
