Chapter 21

It had been two days since Luigi left on his mission, and training with Enzo had gotten infinitely harder. Being so close to him, repeatedly breathing in the touch of spice that lingered on him, was torture. Utter fucking torture.

This morning I’d woken with a plan for the day ahead, several, in fact.

I lingered at Marge’s side after we served breakfast. And watched as she scooped up one last bowl of porridge for Jack. From the inside of her apron, she pulled out a small vial of clear liquid and poured it in.

Since returning from Rigerza, Jack was confined to bed rest, and I hadn’t plucked up the courage to visit him. I wasn’t sure what the weight of guilt would do to me, selfish as that fear was.

Marge fed Jack morning and night, cleaned his bandages, and ground his medicine. On top of all her work, my lack of action had given her this task. But today, I willed myself to stay rooted by Marge’s side and held my hand up as she tried to slip past me.

“I’ll feed him.” The words tumbled out. I needed to see Jack and take responsibility for my failure. “You should rest,” I encouraged Marge.

She clicked her tongue and scolded me with a look.

I remained fixed, refusing to back down. I’d noticed the limp in her right hip had gotten worse with the extra workload. “Don’t think because I’m training it makes me oblivious to how much you do around here. Get yourself a bowl, sit by the pit and eat.” I took Jack’s bowl from her bent fingers.

Her lips popped open in horror at my defiance. Marge was such a sweetheart I doubted anyone had ever taken her on.

“Go on.” I nudged her back.

Wide-eyed, Marge waddled back toward the pot. She glared over her shoulder. Seeing I hadn’t moved, she snatched the ladle, scraping at the bottom of the pot to fill another bowl then plonked down on her stool, and like a scolded child, she begrudgingly raised her spoon to her mouth.

I bit my lip to stop myself smiling and walked over to her. With the touch of my hand, her black eyes frowned up at me, the grouchy expression only making her more adorable. “You do so much for others, Marge. Let me do this for you.” I kissed the top of her head and walked away.

Stopping at Enzo’s side, I kneeled. His dark gaze shifted to me, pausing the conversation between him and Cole.

“I’m feeding Jack. I’ll meet you down in the rings later.” I’d never dare state something like that to Luigi. Even with us on better terms, I still feared his methods. “Oh.” I reached into my back pocket and pulled out the beautiful fabric Enzo had wrapped my hand in to slow the bleeding in Rigerza. “I wasn’t sure what you’d want to do with this?” I held up his headband. “I got my blood out. It didn’t ruin the fabric. It’s really soft still. I didn’t think you’d want to throw it away, but if you wanted to, that would be understandable.
